Why I Launched a School Tour

Since publishing Seconds to Snap in June 2015, I have always envisioned dedicating my time to visiting schools, raising awareness about mental health, eating disorders, and the importance of support, love, and self-esteem.

However, due to my full-time job, I was unable to fully commit to this vision. Instead, I utilised my holidays, weekends, and evenings to deliver this crucial work, allowing me to personally support families facing similar challenges.

This year, my circumstances changed. I received a message from a parent of an 8-year-old child who was struggling. This was the first time I had encountered a case involving someone so young, and it deeply affected me. I realised that, while I had the energy, passion, and determination, I needed to take action.

Drawing on my extensive experience in student support services, delivering Mental Health First Aid across the UK, and collaborating with hospitals, schools, and organisations, I recognised the pressing need for mental health education and support. The messages I receive from families and individuals underscore the urgency of this work.

With the support of my family and close friends, I began approaching businesses for assistance in launching a Scottish School Tour. I was fortunate to receive guidance and advice on how to structure my emails and identify the right contacts. Despite facing numerous rejections and moments of self-doubt, the encouragement from my loved ones kept me going.

Several businesses responded positively and without hesitation. Their support has been invaluable, and I am grateful to each one of them. With everything in place, I launched the tour on Monday, October 16th, at Breaview Academy. It was a surreal experience to return to my old school and meet the wonderful staff and pupils who welcomed me.

I am also thankful to my employer for approving my sabbatical application and to my colleagues for their unwavering belief in me and my mission. Their support has been crucial, especially during moments of doubt.

While this began as a Scottish School Tour, my ultimate goal is to expand it across the UK. If you are able to offer support, please get in touch. In the meantime, stay tuned for updates!

Hugs,

Tina
